A cold sore is a group of blisters caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus.

Once the virus is contracted, it remains dormant in the nerve cells until reactivated. During a cold sore outbreak, the virus awakens and infects the skin cells in or around your lip or mouth.

Cold sores are contagious and can be spread through skin-to-skin contact.

When the cold sore virus is spread, it sneaks into your body through a mucous membrane in your mouth or damaged skin. It remains dormant in a nerve in the facial area until triggered.
